I don’t know where this one came from. Somewhere in my imagination. You start on something and it just takes on a life of its own!

    At Rochester Market

One day at a food shop,
I met a girl selling cats,
    For money she wanted,
But I was looking for rats.

    “Got any rats?” asked I.
“For that’s how I’ll spend my money.”
    “No rats here!”
She seemed to find it quite funny.

    “We’ve got some lovely dresses,
I’ll give you a very fine price.”
“I’d rather have caresses,” said I
    The girl blinked thrice.

    She was exceptionally beautiful,
    And her manner strangely amused.
She wasn’t what I would call dutiful,
    Great disdain she oozed.

Like others, she thought I was odd,
Some say I’m a bit of a fool.
Still, she gave me a courteous nod,
As if she thought I was cool.

So in search of my goal I departed,
But before the food shop could I leave,
    The girl came running full-hearted,
“I can help you I believe.”

    “Cats, rats, you shall find.
    Dresses, caresses, you can get.
If you just open your mind,
    And hurry to Rochester Market.

    So to Rochester I went,
In search of the rats that I craved.
    The winds were eerily sent.
But I felt the day could be saved.

    There were stalls selling cats,
    Bears in many shades.
    Baboons wearing monocles
    And peacocks on parade.

I was greeted by a trader,
    Who seemed rather too tall
    He eyed me from above,
    I felt I would fall.

Before I could open my mouth,
He shouted, “For you, some rats!”
    I headed towards him, south,
    Past some dresses and hats.

“But how did you know?” I asked,
“Do you want them or not?” he did say.
Silently, the rats he passed over to me.
Then vanished before I could pay.

I walked away, the creatures clasped
But writhing their way from my grasp
I stumbled and lost them all on the path
And from behind came a cry, or was it a laugh?
