I don’t know anyone who has read Julian Barnes but I love his prose and have been reading him since he worked at The Observer. He wrote brilliant TV reviews and although his articles now are a bit too intellectual for me, his books are another matter.
Probably my favourite is one of his earlier works Staring at the Sun which I think was made into a film. Very poignant with such a sensitive and sympathetic central character. I also liked his lighter foray, The Only Story. Lovely prose but unpretentious.

I read one of his. I think it was A sense of an ending. It won an award.

I like Zola for his earthiness, power and insight into character, and Nabokov for his talent and peculiar male characters . Pnin is very funny and a good short introductory read.
