What about Elmore Leonard? Seems to have gone out of fashion but for me, there is none better at writing dialogue. If you want a lesson in how to write the way people speak Leonard is a masterclass. While I love Get Shorty and Rum Punch, one of his lesser-known books City Primeval which is staged like a western but set in modern-day Detroit, features the character Raymond Cruz who is brought to life with some lovely lines like this when he is accused by a belligerent reporter of acting like Clint Eastwood. “I don’t have to make up anything. I’m in homicide. It’s dramatic enough the way it is.” There are some real humdingers. I’ll have a re-read and post them on here.
